Why the Clean and Jerk?
The clean and jerk is sometimes referred to as the "King of Lifts." Introduced into the olympics in 1896, the clean and jerk is a full body exercise that requires several muscle groups, joints, and ligaments working in unison. With the proper technique and knowledge of the exercise, the clean and jerk is an acceptable exercise for many, ranging from body builders to everyday individuals.
However, nobody is born with the sufficient knowledge to perform the clean and jerk successfully. In addition, because many novice lifters believe it is as easy as walking into the weight room and picking up the bar stacked with weight, injuries become the inevitable.
Viewers of this web page will obtain a better overall knowledge and understanding of the different muscles groups, and joints involved in the clean and jerk. Specifically, viewers will acquire knowledge of the various muscle contractions that occur, specific movements involved with those contractions and the planes/axis with which they occur, and the different types of body levers involved. Lastly, viewers will learn about a few exercises that can improve overall technique and performance of the clean and jerk.
